Bio
Ken Fast is a Principal Engineer at Electric Boat, a division of General Dynamics. Electric Boat designs and builds nuclear submarines for the US Navy. 25 years ago Ken led the introduction of virtual reality and large scale CAD visualization for ship design. The electronic mockup program he helped develop became the model for all following naval ship classes and carried over to commercial ship design. He currently works on development of advanced design and manufacturing technologies for submarine production and sustainment, working with virtual reality, augmented reality, and computer vision. Ken is actively involved with the National Shipbuilding Research Program. He was named an ACM Distinguished Engineer in 2012. Ken grew up building wooden boats in the backyard and is a second generation engineer at Electric Boat. He is a graduate of WPI with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Addressing Electrical Cabinet Wiring Challenges with AR12:00 PM - 12:20 PM Jun 2Shipbuilding is an odd mix of traditional craft work and high-tech manufacturing. Due to the long construction schedules, complex designs, and limited production shipbuilding remains a largely manual activity with pockets of automation. We are applying augmented reality to the task of wiring electrical cabinets in a project called spARky, funded by the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP, www.nsrp.org). The goal of the project is to reduce the cost of installing wires by showing users the end point connections and the desired routing of each wire through the free space of the cabinet. This will replace the historical use of simple wire tables. A handheld tablet computer will show augmented wire model data inside of the actual cabinet. This will enable correct routing and cable bundling with first-time quality and no rework.
